Araoz posts double-double in loss to Sauk Valley

Marshalltown, IA—Despite outscoring the opposition in the final two quarters, the Marshalltown Community College Women's Basketball team came up short in a 67-57 loss to Sauk Valley Community College on Saturday afternoon at the Student Activity Center.

Freshman Barbara Araoz (Nequen, Argentina/Maria Auxiliadota) recorded her third-career double-double, scoring 10 points and tying a personal-best with 11 assists. JeAnn Hiraldo (Ames, IA/Ames) led the Tigers with 22 points, her 10th career 20-point game. Hiraldo also added eight rebounds.

Shyannon Wolf (Tama, IA/Meskwaki) knocked down three three-point shots and finished the day with 11 points. Victoria Pothast (Melbourne, IA/West Marshall) scored six points with six rebounds and Paola Toledo (Boca Chica, Dominican Republic/San Rafael) came off of the bench to score two points to go along with six rebounds, both career-highs for the freshman.

MCC shot just 29.4 percent from the floor in the first half as the Skyhawks built a 41-25 halftime lead. The Tigers limited Sauk Valley to just nine points in the third quarter while MCC scored 14.

MCC's best output of the day came in the fourth quarter. Wolf knocked down two of her three-point shots in the final frame and the Tigers got within 11 points on two separate occasions, but the Skyhawks held off MCC in the closing minutes to take the win.

The Tigers connected on eight three-point shots, the team's second most in a game this year.

Next up for MCC is a road contest at Des Moines Area Community College at 6:00 PM on Feb. 3.
