WBB Squad Drops Two at Moberly Classic

Moberly, MO- The Marshalltown Community College Women's Basketball squad dropped their opening games at the Moberly Area Community College Classic over the weekend. The Tigers faced tough opponents in the host college, Moberly Area, on Friday and Independence Community College on Saturday.

The opener would not be what Head Coach Steve Garber pictured for his young Tiger team, falling behind the Greyhounds, 20-9 at the end of the first quarter. A strong second quarter from the Tigers where they scored 17 points would not be enough to cover the deficit as they would come up short in the long run 38-77.

Freshman Danielle Smith would lead the team in both points and rebounds with eight of each. Fellow freshman Laurin Lyons would help chip in seven points and five boards. The lone sophomore on the squad contributed six points and six rebounds.

The Tigers hopes of bouncing back on Saturday were stifled by a high powered Independence Community College offense. The Pirates launched 84 shots, 31 being threes en route to 83 points which would be enough to top Marshalltown's 36.

Poor shooting and lack of ball control would characterize the game for the Tigers, only shooting 25.5% from the floor and committing 18 turnovers throughout the contest. Freshman Carla Collado hit the double digit point mark for the first season as she led the Tigers with 12 points. Smith would again be strong on the glass, grabbing nine rebounds.

The Tigers return to action on Tuesday, November 6th as they will host Southwestern Community College in their home opener. The Spartans are also looking to earn their first win after they came away from the Johnson County Classic last weekend empty handed. The game is set to tip off at 6PM at the Student Activity Center.
