Slow Start Dooms Tigers

"We weren't ready to play from the opening tip and our first-quarter score showed that. We had to try to play catch-up the whole game and couldn't recover." Those words from MCC Head Women's Basketball Coach, Steve Garber summed up their loss to Southeastern Community College on Saturday, December 1 very simply, but also very accurately.

A 28-10 first quarter in favor of the Blackhawks put the Tigers in a big hole early. The defense answered the bell in the second quarter by allowing just twelve SCC points, however, the Tiger offense didn't fare much better as they only outscored the Blackhawks by one and headed into the locker room down by 17 with a score of 23-40.

Needing a big second half, the Tigers came out and controlled the third quarter. Again, the defense proved stingy by allowing just eleven points for the home team. This time, the offense did their part as well, scoring 18 points in the frame. By cutting the lead to ten, the Tigers were still in the game, but knew they had work to do if they were going to pull out the win on the road.

In the end, the depth of the Blackhawks prevailed as they received solid contributions from all eleven players who entered the game. Each of the eleven Blackhawks contributed to the stat sheet. While SCC got contributions from eleven players, the Tigers were playing with just eight as freshman point guard, Clara Solsona sat out the game while rehabbing an ankle injury. When all was said and done, the comeback attempt fell short as the Tigers fell 56-69.
