Volleyball wins 5 set thriller

Freshmen Katelyn Yauslin (Cedar Rapids, IA) hit for a career high 26 kills to lead the MCC volleyball team (8-16, 2-2) to a 26-24, 25-18, 18-25, 20-25, 18-16 victory over conference rival Ellsworth Community College.

Yauslin hit 8 of the Tiger's 12 kills in set one to take an early 1-0 lead in the match. The Tigers continued to control the match offensively hitting .267 in set two behind an additional 5 kills from Yauslin. Freshmen Ashley Salgado (Ottumwa, IA) would help fuel the Tiger defense collecting 8 of her team high 23 digs in the set to give MCC a 2-0 advantage.

A lapse in passing would give Ellsworth the third set as MCC struggled to find a rhythm and Ellsworth gained confidence at the net. "We were giving them a lot of free opportunities," said head coach Chris Brees. "They were able to do what they wanted with the ball and it kept us out of system much of the third and fourth sets."

MCC dropped set four setting up a fifth and final set. The Tigers struggled early in set five from the service line, giving up 4 service errors. The struggle would quickly end as the Tigers would rattle off 4 of their 10 aces on the evening in the second half of the set to give the Tigers a 3-2 win.

MCC will not have much time off as they head to DMACC to play four matches on Friday and Saturday. The Tigers will face Butler Community College at 9 am and Parkland Community College at 11 am on Friday in Boone. Play will continue on Saturday with matches against North Dakota School of Science and Highland Community College. Match times for Saturday are schedule for 12 pm and 3 pm.
