Volleyball picks up first conference win of the year

Clinton, IA—The Marshalltown Community College volleyball team picked up its' first Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) victory of the year, scoring a 3-0 victory at Clinton Community College on Tuesday night. Sophomore Ashley Salgado (Ottumwa, IA/Ottumwa) recorded a team-high 37 digs on the night.

The Tigers opened up the match with a 25-9 victory over the Cougars in the first set. Head coach Chris Brees was able to utilize the entire roster over the next two games, scoring victories in straight sets, 25-19 and 25-23. MCC evens their record at 2-2 on the year.

"We were able to try some different things tonight," said Brees. "It was beneficial for us to get everyone some quality playing time so early into the season."

Freshman Miranda Smith (Albion, IA/Marshalltown) led the Tigers once again with 14 kills on the night. Smith was also a factor at the net, leading the Tigers with two solo blocks. Sophomore Katelyn Yauslin (Cedar Rapids, IA/Alburnett) added nine kills for MCC.

Sam Hinrichs (Ankeny, IA/Ankeny) logged 30 assists on the night while serving up one ace.

Freshman Reeba Box (Liscomb, IA/BCLUW) displayed an all-around solid performance for the Tigers, recording 15 digs, two service aces and 10 kills.

Along with Salgado's 37 digs, fellow sophomore Alyssa Whitmore (Legrand, IA/East Marshall) added 13 digs.

The Tigers play host to Grand View University at 7:00 PM on Thursday for the team's first home game of the 2013 season.
