Ashley Salgado named ICCAC Defensive Player of the Week

Sophomore Libero Ashley Salgado (Ottumwa, IA/Ottumwa) of the Marshalltown Community College volleyball team has been named the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Defensive Player of the Week.

Salgado posted back-to-back stellar performances for the Tigers last week, leading MCC to two victories. The sophomore recorded a total of 114 digs to go along with two service aces.

Through five matches this year, Salgado currently ranks first among all NJCAA Divison II participants with 237 digs and 14.37 digs per set. Salgado has totaled 29 more digs than the next closest qualifier while playing five less matches. Salgado's digs per set total nearly doubles the second-ranked player in the country.

In MCC's (3-2) first ICCAC match of the year, Salgado helped the Tigers to a 3-0 victory at Clinton Community College. The sophomore posted 37 digs against the Cougars, the most digs Salgado recorded in all of 2012.

Taking on Grand View JV on Thursday, Salgado posted a remarkable 77 digs against the Vikings, easily topping her previous career high of 62 set against Southeast Community College on August 24. Salgado also served up both of her aces against the Vikings.

Salgado has now recorded five matches of at least 30 digs this year. The Liberal Arts major had just six like-games all of last year.

Salgado and the Tigers return to action on Sept. 6 at the Central Nebraska Invitational.
