No. 7 Kirkwood overwhelms MCC

Marshalltown, IA— A strong start early on for the Marshalltown Community College women's volleyball team died out too soon as the Tigers fell to No. 7 Kirkwood Community College in straight sets on Tuesday, 25-20, 25-15, and 25-18. The Tigers fall to 10-12 on the year and 1-3 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

Sam Hinrichs (Ankeny, IA/Ankeny) led the Tigers with seven kills and 17 assists on the night. Meghann Cole (Des Moines, IA/West Des Moines Valley) contributed six kills while Amanda Keane (Morinville, Alberta/Morinville Community) tallied five.

The Tigers stayed with the visiting Eagles in the opening game, trading points early on with Kirkwood. MCC tied things up at nine but the Eagles pulled away. Trailing 19-12, Kaitlyn Yauslin (Cedar Rapids, IA/Alburnett) provided one of her four kills on the night to spark a rally as the Tigers scored five of the next six points. The Eagles proved to be too much down the stretch, taking game one.

Kirkwood controlled things from the beginning in game two, leading 13-8 at one point and forcing the Tigers into a timeout. The Eagles lead was too much for MCC to make any attempt at a rally.

MCC continued to battle in game three as the Tigers fell behind 4-0 early on but a timeout ignited the team as MCC eventually took an 8-6 lead. The Eagles regained the lead moments later and closed out the game on an 8-2 run.

The Tigers travel to North Iowa Area Community College (11-9, 1-3) for an ICCAC matchup at 7:00 PM on Sept. 26
