Rallies lead volleyball to 3-0 sweep at NIACC

Mason City, IA—Rallies in game one and three lifted the Marshalltown Community College women's volleyball team to a 3-0 victory on the road as the Tigers defeated North Iowa Area Community College Thursday night. MCC improved to 2-3 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) and 11-12 overall.

Ashley Salgado (Ottumwa, IA/Ottumwa) served on seven straight points in game three to help the Tigers rally from a 16-7 deficit. With the Tigers down 24-21, Meghann Cole (Des Moines, IA/West Des Moines Valley) stepped in to serve and led the Tigers with another comeback as MCC took the third and final set 27-25. The Tigers took game one 28-26 and handled game two with ease, taking a 25-11 decision.

"We fought hard tonight," said head coach Chris Brees. "This was a big conference win that we needed. The team battled back and showed what they're capable of."

Miranda Smith (Albion, IA/Marshalltown) carried the Tigers offensively with eight kills while adding two solo blocks and one block assist on the defensive end. Katelyn Yauslin (Cedar Rapids, IA/Alburnett) and Cole combined for 11 kills on the night.

Salgado tallied 15 digs while adding two service aces. Reeba Box (Liscomb, IA/BCLUW) also contributed two service aces. Mehlon Maxwell (Marshalltown, IA/Marshalltown) played a pivotal role in game one for the Tigers, serving on eight straight points to help bring the Tigers back from an 8-2 deficit.
