Tigers swept at home against Southwestern CC

Marshalltown, IA—The Marshalltown Community College women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match to Southwestern Community College on Wednesday night, falling to 3-6 in Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play. The Trojans improve to 7-2 in league action.

Wednesday's match was a part of MCC's Dig Pink effort, the Side-Out Foundation's trademark event to raise awareness for breast cancer research. The Tigers got off to a slow start against the Trojans, falling behind 15-7 in the first set. Southwestern eventually took the set 25-16 to go up 1-0.

MCC put up a solid effort in the second set, going point for point early on with the Trojans. Katelyn Yauslin (Cedar Rapids, IA/Alburnett) came up with a kill to tie the set at 12. MCC controlled a 15-13 lead before the Trojans scored the next two points. Miranda Smith (Albion, IA/Marshalltown) blocked a Southwestern attempt to regain the lead for the Tigers, 16-15. Southwestern tallied the next two points, forcing MCC into a timeout. The Trojans scored eight of the next 11 points to close out the set 25-19.

The third set provided the most entertainment on the night. With the score tied at eight, Southwestern scored three of the next four points, again forcing MCC into a timeout. Southwestern held onto their lead, but never by more than two points until Smith came up with one of her nine kills to tie the game at 19. The Tigers used kills from Reeba Box (Liscomb, IA/BCLUW), Meghann Cole (Des Moines, IA/West Des Moines Valley) and Yauslin to take a 22-21 lead.

Again the Trojans were able to take the lead, but Smith came up with a critical on the brink of defeat to tie the game at 25. However, it was Southwestern that prevailed, scoring the next two points to complete the sweep with a third-set 27-25 victory.

Yauslin led the way offensively for the Tigers, tallying 11 kills on the night. Sam Hinrichs (Ankeny, IA/Ankeny) 30 assists while Ashley Salgado (Ottumwa, IA/Ottumwa) came up with a team-high 17 digs.

The Tigers will host their final regular season contest at 1:00 PM on Saturday as MCC hosts Central College at the Student Activity Center.
