Moline, IL—Strong serving and a dominating presence on the defensive end carried the Marshalltown Community College women's volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of Black Hawk College-Moline on Tuesday night, giving the Tigers their third straight victory. MCC improves to 21-17 overall on the year.
The Tigers posted double-digits in the service ace column for the second straight match, totaling 11 against Black Hawk. Smith now has 125 blocks on the year, good enough for fourth in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).
Black Hawk provided a challenge in the first set, taking the Tigers to extra points but MCC prevailed, scoring a 26-24 victory. From there on out, the Tigers cruised to their ninth sweep of the year with scores of 25-15 and 25-18.
"You know you're playing well when you have seven different players record a service ace," head coach Chris Brees said. Four different players recorded two service aces on the night for MCC- Sam Hinrichs (Ankeny, IA/Ankeny), Ashley Salgado (Ottumwa, IA/Ottumwa), Emily Anker (Earlham, IA/Earlham), and Mehlon Maxwell (Marshalltown, IA/Marshalltown).
Smith led the Tigers offensively as well, posting 12 kills on the night. Katelyn Yauslin (Cedar Rapids, IA/Alburnett) contributed 10 kills.
The Tigers head to Southeastern Community College tomorrow night for the team's final ICCAC contest of the regular season. With a 3-6 conference record, the Tigers are fighting for the eighth and final playoff spot.
