Salgado, Smith add on to postseason honors

Sophomore Ashley Salgado (Ottumwa, IA/Ottumwa) and freshman Miranda Smith (Albion, IA/Marshalltown) of the Marshalltown Community College women's volleyball team have been honored by the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) for their performance throughout the 2013 season. Salgado was named to the First-Team All-Conference while Smith earned Honorable Mention honors.

Both players were named to the All-Region XI-B squad last week as Salgado picked up first-team honors and Smith earned a spot on the second-team. This is the fourth consecutive year the volleyball team has placed at least two players on both the All-Region and the All-Conference team.

Salgado played a major role on the defensive end for the Tigers, leading the team with 796 digs for an average of 6.37 digs per set. The sophomore ranks first in the ICCAC in digs per set and is second in total digs. Salgado's digs per set are also good enough for 10th in the nation and ranks 13th in total digs. Salgado also leads the Tigers with 51 service aces on the year, fifth-most in the conference.

Smith proved to be MCC's offensive leader on the year as the freshman ranked fourth among all freshmen in the ICCAC in total kills with a team-high 367. The rookie also posted 15 matches with double-digit kill totals. Smith led the Tigers with a .205 hitting percentage on the year.

Smith also gave the Tigers a strong option on the defensive end as the freshman ranked fourth in the conference in total blocks with 134. Smith's 61 solo blocks and 73 block assists led the Tigers.

MCC finished the season with a 22-20 overall record, the program's most wins since the 2005 season.
