Marshalltown, IA—A pair of losses on the opening day of the 2014 Tiger Invitational set the Marshalltown Community College volleyball team back on Friday afternoon. The Tigers fell 3-0 to Des Moines Area Community College and came up just short in a five-set thriller against Graceland University JV.

MCC (1-8) fell in straight sets to DMACC (8-3), ranked No. 13 in the latest NJCAA Division II polls, to open the two-day invite, the Tigers' second loss to the Bears in the last nine days. DMACC held off the Tigers 25-13 in the opening set and rolled to a 25-8 win in the second before MCC battled back in a hard-fought third set, but fell 25-19.

The nightcap proved to be a better go-around for the Tigers against Graceland JV (3-4). MCC took the opening set 25-20, before dropping the next two, 25-20 and 25-22. MCC rallied back in the fourth, 25-16 to force a fifth-set tiebreaker. The teams traded points throughout the set, and Kayla Prosser (Eldora, IA/South Hardin) buried a kill to tie the match at 14 to give the Tigers new life. The Jackets held on though, scoring the next two points to win the match.

For the day, Prosser totaled 20 kills, including 15 against Graceland JV, the second-most of the freshman's career. Sam Hinrichs (Ankeny, IA/Ankeny) registered 40 assists on the afternoon, with 28 coming against Graceland JV. Jadelyn Rohach (Toledo, IA/South Tama) produced nine kills and five total blocks against Graceland JV.

The Tigers return to action on the final day of the Tiger Invitational tomorrow. MCC opens up against Allen Community College at 11:00 AM and will close out against Neosho Community College at 1:00 PM. Allen went 2-0 on Friday while Neosho finished 1-1 on the day.
