Volleyball finishes 2-2 at Blue Dragon Classic

Hutchinson, KS—The Marshalltown Community College volleyball team closed out the Blue Dragon Volleyball Classic with a split on Saturday afternoon, taking down Seminole State College 3-1 before falling to Jefferson College 3-0. The Tigers finished the weekend 2-2.

Mady Van Metre (Marshalltown, IA/Ames) and Kayla Prosser (Eldora, IA/South Hardin) paced the offensive attack once again for the Tigers, combining for 23 kills in the opening match victory.

The win over the Trojans was no easy task for the Tigers. After dropping the opening set 25-18, MCC won the next three, but all within five points- 25-23, 25-20, and 25-22, as Seminole State consistently challenged the Tigers through all four sets.

A strong hitting performance from MCC carried the Tigers to the win, recording attacking percentages of at least .429 in the final three sets. Sam Hinrichs (Ankeny, IA/Ankeny) recorded 32 assists to go along with 12 digs. Van Metre and Riley Clark (Papillion, NE/Papillion La Vista South) each tallied 17 digs in the win.

After playing four consecutive matches of at least four sets, including two five-set matches, in the last four days, the Tigers ran out of steam against the Vikings as Jefferson took the contest in straight sets- 25-22, 25-11, and 25-20.

Van Metre posted 13 kills to lead the Tigers' attack. The sophomore has averaged 3.5 kills per set over her last five matches.

The Tigers will head back to Kansas next week, taking on Barton Community College on Sept. 24 and Ottawa University on Sept. 25.
