Volleyball salvages split on day one of DMACC Invite

Boone, IA—Sophomore Mady Van Metre (Marshalltown, IA/Ames) and freshman Kayla Prosser (Eldora, IA/South Hardin) combined to record 33 kills in a 3-1 win over Highland Community College to salvage a split on the first day of the DMACC Invitational. The Tigers dropped a 3-0 match to Parkland College in the invite opener.

Prosser, this week's Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Athlete of the Week, racked up 12 kills for her 20th double-digit kill match of the season and eight in her last nine matches. Van Metre joined Prosser with 11 kills in the win. Prosser and Van Metre rank second and third in the ICCAC, respectively, with 341 and 302 kills. Both totals are also good enough for top-15 rankings in the NJCAA Division I.

After falling in straight sets to Parkland, ranked No. 3 in this week's NJCAA Division II Poll, the Tigers bounced back to take the opening set against Highland, 25-17. The Scotties evened the match at one with a 25-18 win in the second, but the Tigers battled back to take the final two sets, 25-17 and 25-18.

As a team, the Tigers posted a season-best 17 service aces in the win. Van Metre and Prosser each tallied four while Sam Hinrichs (Ankeny, IA/Ankeny) and Meghann Cole (Des Moines, IA/West Des Moines Valley) contributed three each. Hinrichs also collected 33 assists in the win.

Against Parkland, Prosser led the way with eight kills while Jena Boisen (Garrison, IA/Union) grabbed 10 digs. The Cobras won all three sets, 25-13, 25-21, and 25-17.

MCC returns to action at the DMACC Invitational tomorrow morning with a pair of games. The Tigers open up against North Dakota State College of Science at 8:00 AM and wrap up against Iowa Central Community College at 10:00 AM.
