Volleyball suffers setback against No. 8 Indian Hills

Marshalltown, IA—Facing one of the top teams in the nation, the Marshalltown Community College Volleyball team could not bounce back from an early deficit as the No. 8 Indian Hills Community College Warriors swept the Tigers 3-0 at the Student Activity Center on Tuesday night. The Warriors won in straight sets by scores of 25-15, 25-12, and 25-12.

The Tigers fell to 2-12 on the year and are now 0-2 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) while Indian Hills improved to 14-2 and 2-0 in league play.

Freshman Jordan Carter (Sigourney, IA/Sigourney) led the Tigers with 10 kills and eight digs on the night. Carter has now posted double-digit kill totals in each of her last five games, averaging 13 kills per match. The freshman ranks third in the conference in both total kills (151) and kills per set (2.85).

DaNesha Cowley (Waterloo, IA/Waterloo West) and Paola Toledo (Boca Chica, Dominican Republic/San Rafael) each had two total blocks at the net for the Tigers. Raini Hilmer (Dysart, IA/Union) added 20 assists in the loss.

The Tigers stayed close early in the opening set, but the Warriors front-line provided separate runs of five and six points to pull away. Early deficits in both the second and third sets proved to be too monumental for the Tigers to pull back within striking distance.

MCC is off until Oct. 6 when the Tigers welcome North Iowa Area Community College for a 7:00 PM matchup. MCC defeated the Trojans 3-2 on Sept. 20 in Mason City, IA.
