Volleyball storms back for a 3-2 win at Wartburg JV

Waverly, IA—Facing a defeat in four sets, the Marshalltown Community College Volleyball team held its own at Wartburg JV on Thursday night as the Tigers defeated the Knights 3-2. MCC came back from a 2-1 deficit to pick up its fourth win of the season.

The Tigers took the opening set 25-22 before dropping the next two sets, 25-15 and 25-20. MCC outlasted Wartburg in set four, taking the opposition to extra points for a 30-28 victory. The Tigers prevailed in the final set, winning 15-11 to beat the Knights for the second time this season.

MCC also defeated the Knights at home on Sept. 24 by a score of 3-0.

Freshman Nicole Montgomery (Beaman, IA/BCLUW) led three players in double-figure kills with 14. Jordan Carter (Sigourney, IA/Sigourney) and Lannie Dubberke (Cambridge, IA/Ballard) both contributed 12 kills on the night.

Freshman Rieley Rodman (Ankeny, IA/Grand View Christian) posted a career-best 36 digs in the win without recording a return error. Paola Toledo (Boca Chica, Dominican Republic/San Rafael) added 26 digs, her second-best effort of the year.

DaNesha Cowley (Waterloo, IA/Waterloo West) tied a career-best with five total blocks while also tallying six kills.

Raini Hilmer (Dysart, IA/Union) totaled 47 assists on the night, second-most in her career, with double-digit totals in three different sets.

The Tigers were willed to victory after a strong fourth set from Carter who posted seven kills to spark a comeback. Toledo recorded three service aces to lead the Tigers.

As a team, MCC posted a .235 hitting percentage in the fourth set rally. Cowley did not record an error in the win, registering a personal-best hitting percentage of .400.

MCC's road stretch continues with a trip to Indian Hills Community College for an Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) match at 7:00 PM on Oct. 20.
