Tigers Start 2018 7-0

Des Moines, IA – The Marshalltown Community College volleyball team has now started the 2018 season 7-0, defeating the junior varsity squad of Grand View University Thursday night. The team has played well to start the year, but still have some issues to work out before playing their best volleyball.

"We played extremely well in the first set and the score showed it," stated Head Coach Justin Hoskins. "We did a great job of executing our game plan as well as limiting our mistakes. The girls lost some focus in sets 2 and 3. That combined with Grand View making some adjustments made the second and third sets a lot tighter than they could have been. Hopefully we can correct some tendencies and get ourselves playing a complete match."

The Tigers took the first set handedly, taking it 25-12. The second set was a different story, sneaking by with a 25-20 set victory and then taking the third set 25-21. Freshman Sadie Smith led the offensive attach for the Tigers, recording 11 kills on 13 total attacks. Fellow freshmen Marjia Egic and Chiara Mottola also played well, with 10 and 9 kills respectively. Sophomore Jelena Dukic continued her excellent play as the teams' primary setter, recording 39 assists and 10 digs on the night. Defensively, Halee Pedro earned her playing time, recording a team leading 25 digs.

The team will be back in action on Tuesday, September 4 when the Spartans of Southwestern Community College come to Marshalltown for the team's home opener. Last season the Tigers split with the Spartans, defeating them 3-2 in September and falling 3-0 in October.
