Shelby Jr. hits 10 threes in loss at Iowa Western

Council Bluffs, IA—Iowa Western Community College led from the get-go and never looked back as the Marshalltown Community College men's basketball team suffered a 105-94 Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) loss. Terence Shelby Jr. (Peoria, IL/Limestone) knocked down 10 three-point shots in the loss and finished with a career-high 33 points.

The Tigers dropped their seventh straight Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) contest and are now 17-11 on the year.

Freshman Paulius Sakinis (Nebraska City, NE/Lourdes Central Catholic) scored the first four Tiger points. The Tigers stayed in contention early on and trailed by just one, 21-20, until the Reivers went on an 11-0 run to pull away. Iowa Western erupted for 60 first half points and led by 25, 6­0-35 at intermission.

Shelby Jr. hit just two of eight three-point shots in the opening frame, but caught fire in the second half, knocking down eight more treys. Despite the strong shooting performance in the second half from Shelby Jr., the Reivers continued to hold a lead of at least 20 points for a majority of the final 20 minutes to defeat the Tigers for the second time this year.

Shelby Jr. finished the night 10-20 from long-range. His 10 threes give him 93 on the year, which is tied for second-most among all NJCAA Division I players.

Mike Rodriguez (Boston, MA/Redemption Christian Academy) added 22 points in the loss while grabbing eight rebounds. Sakinis contributed a double-double, scoring a career-high 18 points along with 10 rebounds.

MCC will travel to Ellsworth Community College at 7:30 PM on Monday night for a nonconference matchup before wrapping up the regular season at home against conference foe Northeast Community College at 7:00 PM on Feb. 14.
