Assistant Coach, Gustavo Murtha, joins the soccer coaching staff Fall 2024.
Murtha attended Marshalltown Community College from 2018-20, where he excelled as an athlete. As a freshman, he helped the Tigers achieve an impressive 18-1-2 overall record, winning conference, regional, and district championships. He started 15 of 21 games and was named to All-Conference Second Team.
His sophomore season, he was a team captain, starting 17 of 19 games as the Tigers achieved a 14-4-2 record. His earned 2019 NJCAA Division I All-America Third Team, ICCAC All-Tournament Team, tournament MVP, and ICCAC All-Region First Team.
He then transferred to the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where he attended from 2020-2022, and was a team captain. As a junior in 2020, he was named to the All-Summit League Second Team and the Summit League All-Newcomer Team, starting 12 of 14 games. In 2021, as a senior, he started 12 of 14 games.
He completed his MBA in Business Administration at Colorado State University-Pueblo from 2022 to 2024. Although he only played in the fall 2022 season, he started 15 of 17 games, served as team captain, and helped the team become regional champions and runners-up in the national tournament.
In addition to his playing career, he was an Assistant Men's Soccer Coach at Humboldt High School in 2023 and 2024. In 2023, the team finished with a record of 16-2, winning the championship and advancing to the Class 3A State Tournament. In 2024, they ended the season with a record of 13-2.
Murtha, is originally from Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and is married to Rachel Murtha.
