Tiger Athletic Teams Receive National Recognition for Classroom Performance

The NJCAA recently released their rankings for Academic Teams of the Year. In order to be considered, a team must achieve at least a 3.0 team GPA. Of the six athletic teams at MCC, three teams were ranked in the top-20 of their sport for team GPA. Men's Soccer, Volleyball, and Women's Basketball were all recognized with top-20 rankings with Men's Soccer highlighting the group as they were named the NJCAA Academic Team of the Year. The Men's Soccer team had the highest GPA of any of the 238 Men's Soccer teams in the country with a 3.36 GPA.

The #1 ranking for the Tigers was the icing on the cake for a great year for Tiger Soccer. But it wasn't the only area the Tigers were ranked first in this year. On October, 16 the Tigers were also ranked #1 on the field in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll. The Tigers finished the season with a fifth place finish at the national tournament.

Head Coach, Rafael Martinez is just as proud as his team's success in the classroom as on the pitch. "This recognition is a testament to the work ethic and commitment of our student-athletes, the incredible support of our staff, and the dedication of our faculty. From the moment the whole team set foot on campus in August, we notice this was a special group of people and they demonstrated that day in and day out. Our team's success on the field and in the classroom demonstrated that our district's mission of providing quality learning experiences within a diverse community is a reality that we should all be proud of."

Volleyball and Women's Basketball also finished in the top-20 for GPA in their respective sports. Out of 328 volleyball teams, MCC had the eighth highest GPA with a 3.62 GPA while Women's Basketball finished with a 3.41 GPA which was good for the #19 ranking our of 409 teams in the country.
