Mann homers but Tigers fall late to Catawba 5-2

Hickory, NC—Bennett Mann (Marshalltown, IA/Marshalltown) connected on his second home run of the year but the Marshalltown Community College baseball team surrendered four runs late in Thursday's road game as the Tigers fell to Catawba Valley Community College 5-2. The Tigers drop to 3-6 overall on the year.

The Tigers suffered their third straight loss despite eight hits and three extra base knocks. MCC starting pitcher Parker Rolfes (Le Mars, IA/Le Mars) allowed the game's first run in the bottom of the fourth, but Mann answered in the top of the fifth with a solo shot.

Ty Russell (Victoria, BC/Lambrick Park) provided the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth with an RBI double to score Austin Allen (Milo, IA/Southeast Warren) and put MCC up 2-1. Kyle Herrick (Adel, IA/Adel-Desoto-Minburn) relieved Rolfes on the mound and pitched a scoreless sixth inning but the Buccaneers got to the freshman, scoring two runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth. The Tigers were tagged with the loss after failing to score a run through the final three frames.

Next up for MCC will be a four-game set at Guilford Technical Community College beginning with a nine inning game on Friday afternoon. The two will play another nine inning game on Saturday and finish up the weekend with two seven inning games on Sunday.
