The MCC men's basketball team came back to the Student Activity Center Saturday night when they hosted the Hawks of Northeast Community College. Both teams entered the game with nearly identical stats with the Tigers coming in with a 13-8 record and the Hawks entering with a 12-9 record. Both teams are 0-3 in conference play and both average 80 points a game.
The Tiger men would get their first conference win, defeating the Hawks 69-49. The Tigers came out early and overwhelmed the Hawks in the first half, taking a 16-point lead into half. Collectively the Tigers shot 45% from the field with Oscar Kao leading the way going 7-16 from the field for a team leading 17 points. Berk Karadan also had an efficient night going 6-11 and adding 13 points. Mohamed Thiam struggled shooting the ball but was able to record his twelfth double double of the season, as he scored 13 points while bringing in 11 rebounds.
"We had a good performance tonight, the first conference win is nice to see," stated Head Coach Brynjar Brynjarsson. "We played well as a unit and that needs to continue to see success in this conference, we will get back to work Monday and try to keep improving."
The Tigers will be back in action Wednesday, January 31 when the Reivers of Iowa Western come to Marshalltown for their second conference matchup of the season. The Reivers have played well so far going 19-3 this season. The Tigers will look to avenge a previous loss as they fell to the Reivers 87-74 back on January 13.
