Carter, Taylor pitch softball to a pair of wins

Clermont, FL—After playing seven games in three day, including three extra-inning contests, the Marshalltown Community College Softball team regrouped following an off-day on Monday and won two games on Tuesday afternoon. The Tigers dropped Triton College 4-0 and Madison College 4-2.

The Tigers suffered a pair of defeats on Sunday afternoon, but responded well after the team's only day off in Florida and took both games at Legends Way Ballfields. Freshman Jordan Carter (Sigourney, IA/Sigourney) went the distance in the circle in game one against Triton, striking out seven batters to earn the shutout while Paige Taylor (Coquitlam, British Columbia/Terry Fox) struck out nine in seven innings to pick up her third win of the season.

The Tigers are now 8-3 overall on the year, with six of the team's wins coming at THE Spring Games in Clermont.

Playing as the home team in game one, the Tigers got on the board with a run in the second inning after Carter reached base and scored on a Lauren Wolfe (Miles City, MT/Custer County) triple. Rieley Rodman (Ankeny, IA/Grand View Christian) singled and scored in the fourth. Sarah Ghee (Carlisle, IA/Carlisle) and Raini Hilmer (Dysart, IA/Union) put the game out of reach in the fifth with a run each and Carter shut down Triton the rest of the way.

Taking on Madison for the third time this season, the Tigers looked to take the rubber match after scoring three runs in the top of the second for a 3-1 lead. Tess Cheetham (Oceanside, CA/Oceanside), Rodman, and Wolfe all collected hits and scored a run in the frame. MCC added a run in the sixth inning after Courtney Fudge (Pleasant Hill, IA/Des Moines East) scored on a passed ball.

The Wolfpack got a run back in the bottom half of the sixth, but Taylor struck out the side to finish the game and win the season series with Madison.

MCC continues its stretch in Florida with a doubleheader on Wednesday where the Tigers will take on Dakota County Technical College at 8:00 AM (CDT) and Waubonsee Community College at 12:00 PM.
