Tigers take down #1 Iowa Western

Marshalltown Community College Men's Soccer team gave #1 in the nation, Iowa Western Reivers, their first loss of the season yesterday in a 1-0 victory.

The only goal of the game came from MCC's David Montano at the 30-minute mark. Alex Neri had a perfect game in the goal for MCC with 11 saves.

MCC was plagued with penalties receiving four yellow cards and the Reivers with two.

"It was a very hard match for us yesterday," commented MCC Head Men's Soccer Coach Raphael Nascimento. "We know how strong and disciplined Iowa Western is and it's never easy to play them, but we know that we are also a great team."

"We knew that we needed to be careful playing Iowa Western for the circumstances of the season. They are #1 in the nation, undefeated, and they have been very crucial on their finishes. We had two options for the game, either wait for them and explore the counter attacks or to play offensively and push them back. I'm very happy that we decided to go at them offensively. Before the game I told the guys in the locker room, they are undefeated, but we are also undefeated. We haven't lost at home this season and we won't lose at home today."

The Tigers are now 6-5-1 overall and 4-3 in the conference. They will host their final regular season game on Tuesday, Oct. 18 against Iowa Central at 1 pm. Tiger sophomores will be honored prior to the game.

"I'm very happy for the guys and they are the stars of this huge win today. I only gave them the tools and the idea; they bought the idea and they executed perfectly. Our guys can go far, and today's win proves to them that they can achieve higher goals. They played with pride and were brave from the first whistle of the game and they played together. Our goal this season is not completed yet, we have one more game to go and it will be even harder than the one we played today. I believe in our group, and I believe the guys will deliver again to finish up the regular season in the best position we can."
