Women’s Basketball falls in season opener

The Marshalltown Community College Women's Basketball team opened up the season on November 6th, losing to the then ranked #15 North Central Missouri Pirates in Trenton, MO 96 to 55.

It was the first game for Head Coach Cody Freland who spent the last two seasons as an assistant and was very familiar with the Pirates and what they do as a team. Finding themselves down 40 at the half the Tigers played a better second half and never let the Pirates score get higher than 41 while getting many key contributions from their new players as well as from three of the previous season's returners.

"It was a great opportunity for us to grow and learn as a team as we have really only been playing together for less than three months. With adding new offenses and having new roles for players, we know we are built to grow as the season progresses. Playing ranked teams gets us ready for our end goals and NCMC returns seven players from a tournament team last season," quotes Freland.

The Tigers found a spark in freshman Ianara Morbidoni, who playing in her first game as a Tiger scored a team high 23 points and adding three steals, while also hitting four three pointers. The Tigers also got solid contributions from Waiaaria Rogers who added eight points, and Ana Castan who added seven points, and brought down four rebounds and three assists before fouling out.

The Tigers travel to Illinois for two road matchups, playing Southwestern Illinois Friday, Nov. 12 in Belleville, IL at 4:30 pm and at Lewis and Clark in Godfrey, IL for a 1 pm matchup on Saturday, Nov. 13.
