Lawthers makes MCC history

Marshalltown Community College Esports is a new concept on campus, but they have made their debut with a bang. Mario Kart 8 DX Captain Amber Lawthers has finished her regular season play undefeated.

Lawthers, a sophomore at MCC, finished the regular season yesterday as she beat Calhoun Community College out of Huntsville, AL. Mario Kart is played in the best of seven format with Lawthers' record now at 7-0 in matches and 28-0 in individual races.

"Perfect seasons are an incredible accomplishment in any sport, and Amber has done so in her first season, which is amazing," said Assistant Esports Coach Nate Rodemeyer!

The league that MCC participates in, the loser picks the track so even more impressive for Lawthers is that her opponent is choosing the track.

Lawthers graduated from Marshalltown High school in 2019 where she played Mario Kart in tournaments before starting at MCC. She was assigned the captain role based on her skill as a player.

The national playoffs begin Monday, Nov. 28 and consist of single elimination format. If Lawthers makes it all the way through she will be competing for a national title. She will go into playoffs ranked either number one or two in the nation.

"Amber has had an amazing season, especially considering it is year one of our program," commented Esports Head Coach Andrew Goforth. "She is easily one of the top athletes in the country at her game right now at the collegiate level."
