No. 11 Kirkwood slows down MCC

Cedar Rapids, IA—The Marshalltown Community College softball team suffered a setback on Sunday afternoon as the No. 11 Kirkwood Community College Eagles took two wins from the Tigers, 13-1 and 4-2. The defeats snap a three-game winning streak for the Tigers.

MCC managed just five hits in the opener with two coming from freshman Lexie Biehl (Maquoketa, IA/Maquoketa). Kyndal Milder (Columbus Junction, IA/Columbus) scored the lone MCC run on a sacrifice fly from Mackenzie Gott (Oskaloosa, IA/Oskaloosa).

The Tigers struck first in game two with a run in the second inning as Emmeline Huffaker (Baxter, IA/Baxter) delivered a one-out single to score Tacie Blunk (Boone, IA/Boone). Starting pitcher Sarah Wilson (Ottumwa, IA/Ottumwa) held one of the top Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) offenses scoreless through three innings as the Tigers maintained the one-run advantage.

The Eagles finally came around with four runs in the fourth inning to jump ahead for good. Gott scored a run in the fifth on a RBI single from Whitney Baker (Nevada, IA/Nevada), but the Tigers could not catch up with Kirkwood.

McKenna Hotopp (State Center, IA/West Marshall) went 3-3 in the game with two doubles while Biehl and Gott each had two-hit games. Wilson struck out eight batters in the circle in the loss.

The Tigers will welcome a three-day break after playing five games in three days. MCC picks up action on April 9 with its home opener against Des Moines Area Community College.
