Boone, IA—The Marshalltown Community College Volleyball team opened up day one of the DMACC Tournament with a pair of losses on Friday afternoon, falling to Parkland Community College 3-0 and North Dakota State College of Science 3-1.
The Tigers opened up the weekend tournament against NJCAA Division II top-ranked Parkland, who had not lost a match in 37 tries in 2015. MCC dropped the first set 25-15, but put up a fight in set two before falling 25-23. Parkland took the third set 25-12 to finish the sweep.
MCC was able to steal a set in the second match of the day against NDSCS. The Wildcats snuck by MCC 25-22 in set one but the Tigers responded with a 25-23 victory in set two. NDSCS was able to ward off the Tigers in the final two sets, 25-16 and 25-21 to drop MCC to 3-15 on the year.
Jordan Carter (Sigourney, IA/Sigourney) was the lone Tiger to post double-digit kills throughout the day, recording 10-plus in each match. The freshman tallied 11 against Parkland and added 12 more against NDSCS, including five in the second-set victory.
Lannie Dubberke (Cambridge, IA/Ballard) recorded four total blocks, including two solo against the Wildcats in set two. Raini Hilmer (Dysart, IA/Union) totaled 32 assists on the day.
Paola Toledo (Boca Chica/Dominican Republic/San Rafael) posted eight kills against NDSCS while Nicole Montgomery (Beaman, IA/BCLUW) added 12 kills overall on Friday. Rieley Rodman (Ankeny, IA/Grand View Christian) collected 18 total digs and DaNesha Cowley (Waterloo, IA/Waterloo West) posted three total blocks between the two matches.
MCC resumes play at the tournament tomorrow morning with an 8:00 AM match against Johnson County Community College. The Tigers complete the weekend against MCC-Longview at 2:00 PM.
