Baseball, softball set to take on the Sunshine State

The Marshalltown Community College Baseball and Softball teams are ready to kick up their schedule with trips to Florida. The softball team begins play in the Sunshine State this Friday while the baseball team begins play on Monday.

The softball team, who departed Marshalltown Wednesday afternoon, will begin its 13-game slate in seven days at the Legends Way Ballfields in Clermont, FL. The Tigers, boasting a 2-0 record to start the year, will take on Glen Oaks Community College (MI) at 8:00 AM Friday, followed by a contest against Madison College (MN) at 10:00 AM. The Tigers defeated the WolfPack 14-2 on Feb. 26. MCC concludes the day with a 4:00 PM matchup against Walsh University JV.

Saturday pits the Tigers against Spoon River College (IL) and Triton College (IL). MCC will play its third-straight day of multiple games on Sunday, taking on Spoon River once again followed by Monroe Community College (NY). After an off-day on Monday, MCC resumes play against Triton and Madison on Tuesday. Wednesday pits the Tigers against Dakota County Technical College and Waubonsee Community College. MCC's final day of play on Thursday will see the Tigers take on Cuyahoga Community College and Anderson University JV.

THE Spring Games 2016 Schedule

Through two games, the Tigers have outscored their opponents 23-3. Sophomores Taylor Anderson (San Antonio, TX/Churchill), last week's Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Hitter of the Week, and Raini Hilmer are both hitting .571 at the plate with a pair of doubles. In the circle, both Lauren Wolfe (Miles City, MT/Custer County) and Paige Taylor (Coquitlam, British Columbia/Terry Fox) tossed complete game victories to begin the year, combining for one earned run and just six hits.

The baseball team, sporting a 7-5 record after a series split at No. 17 Crowder this past weekend, will make the trek to Vero Beach, FL. The Tigers will participate in the Historic Dodgertown Invitational and will open up against Westchester Community College (NY) at 9:00 AM Monday morning followed by a matchup with the University of Connecticut at Avery Point at 12:00 PM. The Tigers will play under the lights on Tuesday night with a game against Kirkwood Community College (IA) at 6:00 PM.

The team's final day of play will pair the Tigers with Avery Point at 8:00 AM and conclude with a game against Massasoit Community College (MA) at 11:00 AM.

The Tigers will enter the invite with a .341 batting average and a .557 slugging percentage which ranks 16th nationally. Freshman Enmanuel Lopez (Santiago, Dominican Republic/Prepara) has paced the offense with a .472 batting average and an .889 slugging percentage and was named last week's ICCAC Hitter of the Week. Kolton Gonnerman (Centerville, IA/Centerville), this week's ICCAC Pitcher of the Week, shut down nationally ranked Crowder with six scoreless innings on Saturday.
