Marshalltown’s annual Oktemberfest celebration welcomes many new faces each year, and 2014 was no different as many members of the Marshalltown Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams attended their first festival volunteering at numerous events.

The men’s team helped kick off Oktemberfest on Thursday with the annual Kids Fun Run along with Little Miss and Mr. Oktemberfest. On Saturday, the team helped clean up after the local parade on Main St.

Every member of this year’s men’s basketball roster is from outside of the state of Iowa, meaning the incoming freshman experienced Oktemberfest for the first time.

Dajoun Davis, a freshman from Saint Paul, MN was impressed with the turnout of people at the festival. “It was a great experience to get to know the community. Being from out of state, it’s nice to meet the people that support our team throughout the year. I could tell they really appreciated our help, just like we appreciate their support.”

The women’s team spent Saturday morning at the annual Pancake Breakfast at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum serving up hot dishes to over 350 people.

“We didn’t realize how big of an event it was,” said Ilsie Calles, a sophomore from Van Nuys, CA. “It was great to meet so many people from the community and spend time with them. We didn’t just serve food, we got to socialize with everyone and they were really happy getting to know us.”
