MCC suffers 3-0 loss to No. 3 Iowa Western

Council Bluffs, IA—The Marshalltown Community College men's soccer team suffered its first Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) defeat of the year, falling on the road to No. 3 nationally ranked Iowa Western 3-0. The Tigers fall to 4-2-1 overall on the year.

In a rematch of the 2012 Region XI Championship that saw MCC score a 1-0 victory, the Tigers controlled the tempo early on, maintaining possession throughout most of the first half until the Reivers managed to crack the MCC defense in the 40th minute, scoring off a direct kick to go up 1-0. Iowa Western struck twice in the second half as well to drop the Tigers and improve to 7-0-0 on the year.

Marshalltown entered the game receiving votes in the latest NJCAA poll released on Wednesday afternoon while Iowa Western jumped up one spot in the poll from last week.

The Reivers fired 22 shots on the Tigers, eight coming on net. MCC managed just five shots on the day but failed to put one on net. In a physical game that saw 28 combined fouls, the Tigers picked up four yellow cards in the match.

Freshman Julian Pena (Muscatine, IA/Muscatine) suffered the loss in net for the Tigers, stopping five shots on the day.

Iowa Western's first goal came off a direct kick close to the MCC endline, finding the head of a Revier attacker to net the game's first goal. Iowa Western struck again in the 59th minute, burying a shot from the top of the 18-yard box.

The Tigers had a chance to cut the deficit in half just minutes after Western went up 2-0. Juan Carillo (Cordoba, Spain/CES Lope de Vega) sent a direct kick into the box, placing the ball on the head of Hernan Lopez (Muskego, WI/Muskego) who found the back of the net, only to be whistled offside.

Western's final goal came in the 75th minute off a corner kick. The Reivers received nine corner kicks on the day, including six in the second half. The Tigers earned six corners.

After playing its last four matches on the road, MCC returns home for a conference matchup against Scott Community College (1-4-0, 0-0-0) at 1:00 PM on Sept. 14.
