Tigers drop ISU Club 5-1 for fifth-straight win

Ames, IA—Sophomore Juan Carrillo (Cordoba, Spain/CES Lope de Vega) and freshman David Gomez (Marshalltown, IA/Marshalltown) each netted a pair of goals for the Marshalltown Community College men's soccer team Tuesday evening as the Tigers dropped the Iowa State University Club team. The Tigers have now won five games in a row to improve to 8-4-0.

MCC, playing in its final nonconference match of the season, cruised to its fourth straight win with at least four goals. During their five-game winning streak, the Tigers have outscored their opponents 19-4 with three shutouts.

Carrilllo scored the opening goal in the 12th minute as the sophomore teamed up with Jose Cordova (Marshalltown, IA/Marshalltown) for the initial lead. Carrillo has scored the first goal of the game five times this season. In 31 career games, Carrillo has scored the first goal of the game 12 times for the Tigers.

Gomez scored the second goal of the match in the 41st minute for the Tigers to double the lead. Fellow Marshalltown High School teammate Martin Chavarria (Marshalltown, IA/Marshalltown) played a through ball from the left side for Gomez's fifth goal of the year.

An Iowa State goal opened up the second half to cut the deficit to one, but Carrillo was there to keep the lead safe as the sophomore scored off of a rebound in the 61st minute. Carlos Smith (Des Moines, IA/East) provided an insurance goal in the 78th minute on an assist from Gomez to put MCC up 4-1.

Gomez recorded his first-career multi-goal game in the 85th minute with the game's final goal on a shot from close range. The freshman's five-point game is a career-high and has now tallied eight points in the team's last two games.

Kwan Tolbert (Conway, AR/Conway) picked up the win in net, stopping three shots in 60 minutes of action. Sophomore Andrew Waterfall (Brandon Valley, SD/Brandon Valley) stopped two shots in 30 minutes of relief.

The Tigers return to Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) action at 2:00 PM on Saturday at Iowa Western Community College, ranked No. 4 in this week's NJCAA Division I Poll. The Reivers defeated MCC 1-0 on Sept. 6.
