Softball falls twice to Iowa Western in home opener

Marshalltown, IA—The Marshalltown Community College softball team dropped its first two Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) games in the team's home opener to Iowa Western Community College on Wednesday afternoon, 17-1 and 23-3. Sarah Ghee (Carlisle, IA/Carlisle) collected two hits and two RBI on the day.

The Reivers (26-11) entered the day receiving votes in the latest NJCAA Division I poll. After scoring two runs in the first inning in game one, Iowa Western pulled away with six runs in the second inning off of MCC starting pitcher Lauren Wolfe (Miles City, MT/Custer County). The Tigers' lone run came on an RBI-single from Ghee in the fifth inning, scoring Kayla Lopez (Tracy, CA/Merrill F. West).

Iowa Western opened up game two with three runs in the top of the first inning, but Ghee doubled in the bottom half of the frame to score Wolfe to cut into the early deficit. The Reivers put together a big inning in the second, scoring 11 unearned runs, all coming with two outs.

Chezarae Garcia (Ogden, UT/Ogden) and Wolfe scored on RBI from Kortlan Ollinger (Robins, IA/Linn Mar) and Amanda Staudt (Charles City, IA/Charles City) in the fifth inning to round out the MCC scoring.

The Tigers' home-stand continues with doubleheader ICCAC games against Indian Hills Community College on Friday, Southeastern Community College on Saturday, and Muscatine Community College on Sunday.
