Softball falls twice at home to Southwestern

Marshalltown, IA—A day after earning its first two victories of the year, the Marshalltown Community College softball team fell short against Southwestern Community College, dropping a pair of games 17-6 and 13-1 at home on Tuesday. The Spartans took advantage of a windy day at the Marshalltown Softball Complex, scoring seven runs on three home runs in the first inning of game one against the Tigers. MCC got three runs back in the bottom half of the inning as Amanda Staudt (Charles City, IA/Charles City) laced a double to right center to score Lauren Wolfe (Miles City, MT/Custer County). Kari Smith (Marshalltown, IA/Marshalltown) singled to score Staudt and Kayla Lopez (Tracy, CA/Merrill F. West) roped a double to score Smith to keep MCC in contention.

Southwestern added a run in the second and two more in both the third and fourth innings. The Spartans broke the game open with five runs in the top of the fifth. The Tigers scored three more runs in the bottom of the fifth on RBI from Smith, Chezarae Garcia (Ogden, UT/Ogden), and Kaycee Ray (Clinton, UT/Clearfield).

Smith recorded two hits, two runs, two RBI and a stolen base in the loss while Sarah Ghee (Carlisle, IA/Carlisle) added two hits of her own. Wolfe was tagged with the loss.

The Spartans jumped ahead in the first inning once again in game two, scoring three times. Southwestern put four runs on the board in the second and five more in the third before the Tigers scored their lone run. Raini Hilmer (Dysart, IA/Union) led off the third with a single and came around the score on an RBI-double from Ghee.

Ollinger finished the game 3-3 at the plate with a double. The sophomore is batting .615 (8-13) in her last four games. Cass Vasquez (Los Angeles, CA/Oscar De La Hoya) suffered the loss in the circle.

Wednesday's scheduled doubleheader at Iowa Western Community College has been pushed back to Thursday in Council Bluffs. First pitch is set for 2:00 PM.
