Tigers hang tough, but fall in conference opener

Ottumwa, IA—Playing in its first-ever NJCAA Division I Region XI contest, the Marshalltown Community College volleyball team dropped a hard-fought 3-0 match to host Indian Hills Community College at the Tom Arnold Net Center on Tuesday night. Kayla Prosser (Eldora, IA/South Hardin) recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 10 assists.

Taking on the Warriors (11-0, 1-0) for the first time as conference foes, the Tigers (1-6, 0-1) dropped a 25-12 decision in the opening set. MCC bounced back to keep things close in the second set, but eventually fell 25-20. The Tigers continued to build in the third set and held a late lead, but dropped the deciding set 25-22.

Prosser recorded just three errors in 20 attempts for a .400 hitting percentage. Sam Hinrichs (Ankeny, IA/Ankeny) posted a team-high 16 assists to go along with nine kills for MCC.

The Warriors got off to a quick start on the Tigers with a 6-0 lead in the opening set. Indian Hills rolled to the first set win, but a battle ensued in the second set as the Tigers held an early 7-6 advantage. A five-point run for the Warriors changed the momentum of the back-and-forth struggle to give the Warriors a 2-0 match lead.

In the third set, MCC took an early lead again, this time with a 6-5 edge. The Tigers forced 10 ties, including a 17-17 deadlock, and four lead changes in the game, but Indian Hills held on for the sweep.

MCC looks to bounce back at the Student Activity Center as the Tigers host the 2014 Tiger Invitational on Friday and Saturday with all matches streamed live online.
