Early offense, late defense carries MCC to 77-50 win

Marshalltown, IA—Sophomore JeAnn Hiraldo (Ames, IA/Ames) and freshman Barbara Araoz (Neuquen, Argentina/Maria Auxiliadota) combined for 42 points and a pair of double-doubles as the Marshalltown Community College Women's Basketball team dropped Little Priest Tribal College 77-50 on the final day of the Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel Classic at the Student Activity Center Saturday night. The Tigers improve to 2-3 on the year.

Hiraldo poured in her third 20-point game of the season after finishing with a team-high 22 on the night. Hiraldo leads the Tigers with 18.8 points per game this season. The sophomore also grabbed 12 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Hiraldo's 12.0 rebounds per game also lead MCC.

Araoz scored a career-best 20 points in the win while also dishing out a personal-high 10 assists to go with six rebounds, two steals, and two blocks.

Accacia Huff (Peoria, IL/Central) and DaNesha Cowley (Waterloo, IA/Waterloo West) contributed in the rebounding battle as the freshmen grabbed season-highs of 19 and 14 rebounds, respectively. Shyannon Wolf (Tama, IA/Meskwaki) hit three three-point shots to finish with 10 points for the Tigers. Samuari Jones (Louisville, KY/Seneca) added two points and three rebounds in the win.

The Tigers opened up the night with back-to-back three-point shots from Wolf and Hiraldo to stake an early advantage. Cassie Cullen (Ankeny, IA/Lynnville-Sully) hit consecutive shots for MCC and Wolf nailed another three to put MCC ahead by double-digits. MCC took a 25-17 lead into the second quarter.

The Tigers continued to build on their lead in the second quarter as the home team allowed just five points in the frame and went into halftime on a 21-0 run for a 48-22 margin.

MCC held a lead of at least 20 points the remainder of the contest, giving the Tigers its first win of the weekend classic.

The Tigers host its final classic of the season next weekend with the 2015 Emerson Classic at the Student Activity Center. MCC will take on Missouri Valley JV at 7:00 PM on Friday and Mineral Area College at 4:00 PM on Saturday.
