Joel Serrano Called Up to Puerto Rico National Team

San Juan, Puerto Rico - The Puerto Rican Football Federation has called up Marshalltown Community College Goalkeeper, Joel Serrano, to play for the Puerto Rico National Team. Serrano is currently the Tigers #1 Goalkeeper, recording two saves in the Tigers two shutout victories this season.

"This is extraordinary news for Joel and the MCC Soccer family," stated Head Soccer Coach Rafael Martinez. "Joel's dedication and commitment to excellence had made it possible for him to experience one of the most beautiful things you can experience as an athlete, representing your country. We have known he has been on the radar of the senior national team since he was a freshman, but getting the call for an official CONCACAF match is an amazing honor that I know Joel will take full advantage of."

Serrano was called up earlier this summer and spent time practicing with the team but has yet to record any minutes, an opportunity he hopes he will get this time.

"I had a great opportunity this summer to practice with the Puerto Rico National Team for three weeks," stated Serrano. "I will be on the depth chart and hope to get in the games but being on this team is an amazing honor and I am grateful to everyone that has helped me get here, especially Coach Martinez for helping me in my development and for allowing me to travel to play for my country."

Coach Martinez is excited for Serrano's call up, and proud of what Marshalltown Community College has been able to provide for their student-athletes.

"The academic, social, and athletic opportunities that this institution provides has made it possible for us to recruit quality student athletes from around the world," stated Martinez. "Seeing them be recognized at that level makes us all feel very proud of being a part of their journey. I know Joel will represent MCC well."

Serrano will travel to Puerto Rico on Monday, September 3 and will be gone until Tuesday, September 11, missing two MCC matches. Serrano will miss the Tigers home opener against the Red Tails of Hawkeye Community College on Wednesday, September 5 and then miss Saturdays match against the Tritons of Iowa Central.
