The Marshalltown Community College women's basketball team won its fourth straight game for the first time since 2013, beating Elgin CC 59-54 on Friday night during the Emerson Classic.
The Tigers (5-1) overcame a low-scoring night by limiting the Spartans (0-4) to just 29.8 percent shooting from the field (17-for-57) to win four in a row for the first time since MCC claimed eight-straight early in the 2013-2014 season.
Shenell Stewart and Kenijae Cherry scored a team-high 14 points apiece for the Tigers, while Nunu Johnson added 13 points. Cherry and Johnson both posted double-doubles with 15 and 11 rebounds, respectively. MCC pounded the glass to win the rebounding battle 50-40 thanks to 21 offensive rebounds the Tigers turned into 20 second-chance points.
Mia Sao-Martinez added nine points for MCC and Destiny Sao-Martinez scored seven more. Elgin was led by Valeria Costilla's game-high 19 points and eight rebounds. Jordan McIntosh added 13 points and Izzy Vidallo had 10.
MCC is back in action today with a 5 p.m. game against North Central Missouri College.
