No. 9 Tigers off to best start in school history after 2-0 win

Marshalltown, IA—The No. 9 Marshalltown Community College Men's Soccer team defeated William Penn JV 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon, improving to 10-0-1 on the year. The Tigers used a pair of goals in each half to drop the Statesmen.

Hours after learning that the team moved up in this week's national rankings, coming in at No. 9 in the NJCAA poll and No. 10 in the NSCAA poll, the Tigers hosted the Statesmen. Freshman Adrian Gomez (Ponteareas, Spain/Aceimar) converted in the first half while sophomore David Gomez (Marshalltown, IA/Marshalltown) tallied his fifth goal of the year midway through the second frame.

The Tigers run their unbeaten streak to 11 games to start the year, making it the best start to a season in school history. The 2007 team won its first ten games of the season, but dropped its 11th match of the year.

MCC allowed just one shot on the day compared to 25 of their own. 10 of the team's shots were on goal. The Tigers also recorded six corner kicks on the day, opposed to zero for the Statesmen.

Fernando Gutierrez (Ibiza, Spain/I.E.S. Algarb) set up the Tigers' first goal of the day after the sophomore defender was taken down inside the William Penn JV box. Adrian Gomez stepped up to take the penalty kick and buried the shot in the upper left corner for his sixth goal of the year, tied for second in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) with fellow teammate Alberto Morales (Granada, Spain/Santa Fe DH).

Despite a one-goal advantage, the Tigers controlled the possession of the game. MCC doubled its lead in the 68th minute after sophomore defender Agustin Ortiz (Marshalltown, IA/Marshalltown) sent a cross in to the Statesmen box from the far left side. The pass found the foot of fellow Marshalltown High School teammate David Gomez who found the back of the net.

The game-winning goal is the third of the season for Adrian Gomez which tops MCC. The freshman is also 2-2 in penalty kicks on the year.

MCC has now shut out its last two opponents, lowering its season team goals against average to 0.45, which ranks third in the nation. Rafael Pereira (Lisbon, Portugal/Escola Secundaria Vergilio Ferreira) ranks fourth individually with the same mark.

MCC returns to conference play with a home game against Northeast Community College at 2:00 PM on Saturday.
