Marshalltown, IA— The Marshalltown Community College softball team suffered a pair of losses to Southeastern Community College at home on Saturday, dropping the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) contests by scores of 6-3 and 8-5.
The Tigers (13-11/0-4) managed 12 hits combined on Saturday, but the Blackhawks (16-12/2-2) held off late rallies from MCC to sweep the afternoon doubleheader.
Courtney Fudge (Pleasant Hill, IA/Des Moines East) scored the team's first run in the first inning of game one. Lexie Valentine (Des Moines, IA/Saydel) drove in Tess Cheetham (Oceanside, CA/Oceanside) in the fourth inning to tie the game at one. A fifth inning run from the Blackhawks was matched by an RBI-single from Annalee Myers (Ames, IA/Ames) in the sixth.
Southeastern eventually took the opener with three runs in the top half of the seventh. The Tigers put a pair of runners in scoring position in the final frame but could not match the Blackhawks' efforts.
After snapping her 22-game hitting streak in game one, freshman Shaena Robinson (Gardnerville, NV/Douglas) connected on a two-run home run in the third inning to give MCC a 2-1 lead. The lead was short-lived as Southeastern put up seven runs in the top of the fourth.
Solo home runs from Fudge and Josie Carpenter (Wapello, IA/Wapello) brought the Tigers within three, 8-5, heading to the final inning. The Tigers left three runners stranded to close out the game.
MCC returns to action Sunday afternoon against conference-foe Indian Hills Community College. First pitch is set for 2:00 PM.
