Tigers' season comes to a close in region tournament

Council Bluffs, IA—The Marshalltown Community College softball team's season came to a close on Tuesday afternoon as the Tigers fell to Iowa Western Community College 8-0 in the elimination game of the 2017 NJCAA Division I Region XI Tournament. MCC finishes the season with its second-straight winning campaign with a record of 23-19.

The No. 4 seed Tigers received another strong performance from starting pitcher Paige Taylor (Coquitlam, British Columbia/Terry Fox) as the sophomore held the second-seeded Reivers scoreless through three innings. Iowa Western broke through with two runs on two outs in the fourth inning and added six more in the fifth to eliminate the Tigers from the postseason.

Sophomore Samuari Jones (Louisville, KY/Seneca) and freshman Dion Shirley (Van Meter, IA/Van Meter) recorded the lone hits for the Tigers. Taylor struck out a pair of batters in her final appearance as a Tiger.

The MCC sophomore class concluded its two-year run with a school-record 52 wins over the past two seasons.

Iowa Western defeated Southeastern Community College and will play top-seeded Indian Hills Community College on Wednesday afternoon for the Region XI title.
