Tigers drop a pair of five-set battles at RKP Invite

Beatrice, NE—The Marshalltown Community College Volleyball team opened up the RKP Invite with a pair of hard-fought losses on Friday afternoon, falling to Cloud County Community College and Northeast Community College by identical 3-2 scores.

The Tigers opened up the day with a first set victory over Cloud County, but fell behind 2-1. MCC rallied to take the fourth set but could not complete the comeback in the five-set match. In the second match of the day against the Hawks, the Tigers got off to a slow start, dropping the first two sets. The resilient Tigers showed their competitiveness and rallied for two straight set wins to force a fifth-set tiebreaker. Northeast was able to outlast the Tigers in the final frame.

"Today was a good day for us," stated MCC head coach Justin Hoskins. "It really showed us what we need to continue working on and the importance of balancing aggressive play with smart volleyball. We talked a lot about viewing the season as a three month long process. Today we put ourselves in a position to win a couple of matches, but couldn't finish the job. Learning how to win is part of the process for us right now. Hopefully we can learn from these tight losses and take another step forward tomorrow."

The Tigers return to action tomorrow, taking on tournament host Southeast Community College at 10:00 AM and finish up the weekend with a 2:00 PM match against Southwestern Community College.
