Marshalltown, IA—An early first set win did not hold up as the Marshalltown Community College Volleyball team dropped its 2016 home opener, falling 3-1 to visiting Waldorf JV on Wednesday night at the Student Activity Center. The Tigers fall to 2-4 on the year.
Freshman Sara Bisbe (Barcelona, Spain/CV Saint Cugat) led the Tigers with 13 kills on the night while sophomore Rieley Rodman (Ankeny, IA/Grand View Christian) racked up a team-high 16 digs. Freshman Nina Bales (Lacona, IA/Southeast Warren) dished out a team-best 26 assists in the loss.
The Tigers jumped out to an early lead over the Warriors in the opening set, maintaining a two to three point margin throughout most of the frame. A pair of blocks from sophomore Nicole Montgomery (Beaman, IA/BCLUW) set the tone as MCC took a 25-21 victory.
The Warriors, coached by former MCC volleyball and basketball standout Mady Van Metre, came out firing in game two and took a 15-5 advantage. Waldorf held off a late push from the Tigers and took the set 25-15.
Sets three and four proved to be much of the same for both sides as the Warriors built early leads and held on for 25-15 and 25-13 victories to close out the match.
MCC controlled the first set with a .200 hitting percentage, but the average dwindled over the next three sets that eventually led to the Tigers' downfall on the night.
Next up for MCC is a trip to Norfolk, NE for the Northeast Community College Tournament on Friday afternoon. MCC takes on Central Community College at 1:00 PM and tournament hosts Northeast at 5:00 PM.
The next home game for MCC will be Sept. 7 as the Tigers open up Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play at 7:00 PM against Iowa Western Community College.
