Tigers wrap up basketball camp with local kids

The Marshalltown Community College men's basketball team and the Marshalltown Parks and Recreation department teamed up this fall to host the Basketball Skills Program for local children. The Tigers worked with children from first grade through sixth grade for four weeks.

Prior to the start of the regular season, the men's basketball team devoted Monday and Wednesday nights to the basketball camp. The Tigers helped the youth develop their basketball skills while teaching the fundamentals of the game.

The camp was held at two locations throughout Marshalltown- the Veterans Memorial Coliseum located in downtown Marshalltown and Babe Harder Gymnasium on the campus of MCC.

The camp concluded with all participants, roughly 30 kids, escorting the Tigers from the locker room into pre-game warmups for the team's home opener on Nov. 4 against Quakerdale Prep. The Tigers won the contest, 96-80.

Sophomore Jerome Gray (Milwaukee, WI/Young Coggs Prep) was given the responsibility of running the entire camp this year. "This was my third year helping out with the kids," said Gray. "The kids really enjoy their time with us and it's great that the parents get involved too."

"I took it upon myself this year to really step it up for the kids," Gray continued. "We went over a lot of the fundamentals of the game but gave them some challenges to better their basketball skills as well. I enjoy working with the kids just as much as they enjoy coming to the camp."
