Tigers rout Grand View JV 89-65 on Sophomore Night

Marshalltown, IA—The Marshalltown Community College men's basketball team cruised to an 89-65 victory over Grand View JV on Tuesday night's Sophomore Night at the Student Activity Center, extending the team's winning streak to a season-high four games. Troidell Carter (Lilburn, GA/Meadowcreek), one of seven sophomore's honored prior to the start of the game, recorded career-highs of 28 points and 16 rebounds to pace the Tigers.

Carter posted his second-straight double-double and is now averaging 24.3 points per contest over his last four games. Guilherme Verardo (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Clube Pinheiros) also posted a career-high with 21 points, knocking down a personal best seven three-point shots, including five in the first half.

As a team, the Tigers shot 57.6 percent from the floor. Carter went 12-15 overall, a personal best in field goals in a game. Mike Rodriguez (Boston, MA/Redemption Christian Academy) dished out nine assists as the Tigers assisted on 20 of the team's 34 field goals.

The Tigers opened up the first half with 44 points through the first 20 minutes thanks to Verardo's three-point shooting, knocking down 5-7 from beyond the arc. Carter reached double-figures for the 13th straight game with 13 points in the first half along with seven rebounds en route to his 12th career double-double. 

MCC extended its lead early on in the second half and continued to control the pace of the game. Merdic Green (Levittown, PA/Harry S. Truman) scored all nine of his points in the second frame for the Tigers.

Tuesday night's game was the final regular season home game for seven sophomores- Carter, Jamal Gatali (Toronto, ONT/Downsview), John Johnson (Philadelphia, PA/Horace Furness), Pierce Kelly (Marshalltown, IA/Marshalltown), Chris Bru (Lakeville, MN/Eden Prairie), Kenny Strong (Youngstown, OH/Chaney) and Terrell Clyburn (Romulus, MI/Romulus).

The Tigers finish their regular season schedule with a road trip to No. 1 Indian Hills Community College on Saturday night at 7:00 PM. MCC will host Northeast Community College on Monday night for the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Tournament play-in game.
