Former Tiger Marquis Navarre dominating Australian league

The Latrobe Demons of the North West Basketball Union (Australia) have landed former Marshalltown Community College men's basketball player Marquis Navarre. Navarre, who played for the Tigers during the 2007-08 season, has provided an immediate impact for the Demons.

Navarre's basketball career has taken him to numerous stops throughout the world, but it seems the former Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Second-Team All-Region selection has found a niche in Australia.

After being acquired by the Demons in the team's second game of the year, Navarre has exploded in three games, averaging 30.0 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. The 26-year old has poured in games of 26, 34, and 30 points to start his tenure in Australia, all wins for Latrobe. Navarre also calmly knocked down two free throws in the final second in his first game for the team to give the Demons a 70-69 victory. Navarre has yet to miss a minute of action in the three games, playing a total of 120 minutes.

During the 2007-08 season, Navarre, a native of Oceanside, CA, came to Marshalltown Community College to play for head coach Brynjar Brynjarsson. Navarre finished second in the conference that year with 16.3 points per game and 4.6 assists per game as the Tigers went 14-16 overall.

Following the season, Navarre took his talents to NCAA Division I Montana State where he averaged almost eight points per contest while playing in 58 games during two seasons of action.

Over the next four years, Navarre travelled the globe, looking for an opportunity to continue his career on the court. Navarre eventually wound up in Sydney, Australia on his own dime, showcasing his skills in local gyms for coaches to see. The former Tiger landed a tryout with the Demons through a mutual connection. The tryout landed Navarre an immediate spot in the team's starting lineup. Navarre's early success has proven beneficial for both parties involved as the Demons are currently tied for second-place thanks to the team's three-game winning streak.

Navarre and the Demons have 17 games remaining on their regular season schedule this year. The team's next game is slated for March 7.
