COUNCIL BLUFFS — DJ Hamilton's potential game-winning 3-pointer rimmed out just before the final horn sounded on Iowa Western's 86-84 victory over the Marshalltown Community College men's basketball team on Saturday night at Reiver Arena.
Iowa Western (6-2) missed a pair of free throws down the stretch as the Reivers watched their seven-point lead dwindle to two, 86-84, after a layup by Justice Small with 24 seconds left.
MCC took a timeout with 10.4 seconds left to set up a final play, which created a good look for Hamilton from the corner.
Small rebounded the miss but couldn't get off a shot before time expired.
Jadon Cool scored a game-high 25 points to lead Iowa Western. Amaahd Roberts added 17 points off the bench, and Bryson Calamese had 14 points and seven assists for the Reivers.
Richard Udoagwa tallied 15 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots for MCC, which saw its three-game winning streak snapped. Small and Jayden Hill added 14 points apiece, with Small snaring a team-high eight rebounds. Ahmed Ibrahim pitched in with 11 points and five rebounds off the bench.
The Tigers' five-game road swing continues with Tuesday's trip to Iowa Falls for a 7:30 p.m. showdown with NJCAA Division II No. 7-ranked Ellsworth CC.
