Marshalltown, IA—Tying a season-best effort with 10 three-point shots, the Marshalltown Community College women's basketball team dropped Southeastern Community College 59-53 at the Student Activity Center on Monday night. With the win, the Tigers improve to 5-7 on the year, surpassing last year's win total of four.
Three different Tigers scored in double-figures, led by Estelle Eduardo's 17. The freshman converted five of the team's three-point field goals in the win, connecting on 10 attempts. Barbara Araoz (Neuquen, Argentina/Maria Auxiliadota) hit both of her three-point attempts to finish with a season-high 13 points while Loralei Siliga (Euless, Texas/San Leandro) scored 12. Alyssa Roth (Clinton, IA/Northeast) came off of the bench to add eight points a team-high nine rebounds.
The Tigers shot 50.0 percent from three-point range on Monday night, just one game removed from shooting 4-25 from beyond the arc. The team's shooting clip against Southeastern was a season-best.
The first points of the night for MCC came from deep as Eduardo's three sparked a 10-2 run to open the night. The freshman buried two three's during the stretch. The Blackhawks answered the run with an 8-2 spurt of their own as the Tigers led by just two, 12-10 at the end of the first quarter.
Roth made an impact immediately to start the second half, hitting back-to-back threes to give the Tigers an 18-12 lead just two minutes into the second quarter. Freshman Nisha Doby (Temple, GA/Temple) hit a three from the corner to put MCC up by double-digits, 29-18 and the Tigers went into halftime leading 31-22.
Araoz scored the first seven points of the third quarter for the Tigers to maintain the lead. The Blackhawks got within six, but a three from Araoz with 27 seconds to play in the quarter gave MCC a 43-34 lead heading to the final stanza.
Siliga's free throw to open the fourth gave the Tigers a 10-point edge, but the Blackhawks strung together a 9-0 run to bring the game within one, 44-43. A layup from Eduardo followed by a three-point play erased the run from the Blackhawks. One final three from Eduardo proved to be the dagger as the Tigers avenged a 69-51 loss to the Blackhawks on the road on Nov. 26.
Aside from the Tigers' dominant performance from beyond the arc, MCC committed a season-low 11 turnovers in the win while forcing 21 miscues from the Blackhawks. The Tigers scored 15 points off of those turnovers.
MCC wraps up the first half of the season on the road at Iowa Lakes Community College on Wednesday night as part of a doubleheader with the men's team. The women tip-off at 5:30 PM
