Garber announced retirement after 36 years

Marshalltown Community College Women's Basketball Coach Steve Garber announced he would be retiring after 36 years of coaching, with eight coming at the helm of MCC.

Over his 36 year career, he had the privilege of coaching under two Women's Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame Coaches in Chris Weller at the University of Maryland (1988-1990) and Lorene Ramsey at Illinois Central (1997-2003). Garber was a member of the Maryland staff who reached the NCAA Division I Final Four in 1988.

It was at Illinois Central though that Garber would have his greatest success as a coach. He would amass a record of 230 and 69, while also having seven All-Americans and 24 All-Region players. He led the Cougars to a 2005 runner-up title, before winning the NJCAA tournament the next season in 2006, giving Illinois Central their 6th National Title. The team also finished third in 2008.

Garber took over the MCC Women's Basketball program in the 2013-2014 season and would lead the Tigers to their most wins since 2010-2011 with 18. The biggest highlight at the NJCAA Division I level for the Tigers came in 2015-2016, as they upset number four ranked Iowa Western Reivers during the first season as DI.

Garber received his Bachelor's degree from Monmouth College, where he was a member of the Fighting Scots' basketball team. He would then obtain his Masters of Education from Stephen F. Austin University.

MCC Athletic Director John Kriebs had this to say on Garber's retirement, "We wish him all the best on his retirement from coaching. He has done amazing things for this program and department and has done it with class and dignity."

Kriebs also stated that they will be moving fast and quickly to find a replacement for Garber.
