MCC soccer splits for the week

The Marshalltown Community College soccer team split this past week in play with a 4-1 win over Southeastern at home on Tuesday, Oct. 8 and a hard fought 1-0 loss at Iowa Western on Saturday, Oct. 12.

Yushi Nagao, Gustavo Leal, Guilherme Pereira and Augusto Cunha each had a goal in the game against Southeastern. Johonatan Brandt had two assists and Matheus Pereira had an assist as well.

In the game against Iowa Western the Tigers took it into double over time. They fell two minutes into the second overtime 1-0.

"I thought we had two fantastic performances against quality opponents that make it very difficult to play the style we like to develop," commented MCC Head Soccer Coach Rafael Martinez. "I think we still managed to possess the ball and create good scoring opportunities, but the difference between the Southeastern match and the one at Iowa Western was our ability to put the ball in the net. Focusing on the overall performance and not the score, I am very happy with what this team is doing. We will regroup and work to fine tune the things we can still improve so we can  perform with an even higher level of execution during the tournament play; this has been our main goal since August 1st and some bad results will not distract us."

MCC has only two games left in regular season play. They will host Hawkeye Community College on Saturday, Oct. 19 for sophomore day and will travel to Graceland University on Tuesday, Oct. 22.
